Let the sovereignty flag fly on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, says Tariana Turia. Photo / SuppliedKia ora Whanau, we've decided to publish a special Waitangi Day Issue which highlights the array of exciting and dynamic events around the country and around the world.

It has been amazing to watch as recognition for Waitangi Day grows and evolves, reflecting both traditional and contemporary understandings of the significance of the day. We've tried to include as much as we could, however time is short so forgive us if we have not included your event.

We were however, saddened to see that Transit NZ has rejected a request lodged last week from Ata Tino Toa to fly the Tino Rangatiratanga flag on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Of interest are the details that Maori Party Co-leader, Tariana Turia, highlighted, the fact that Australia accepts the legitimacy of the Aboriginal flag and that the Tino Rangatiratanga flag will be flying on Santa Monica Beach in California on Waitangi Day (for details click here).

Ata Tino Toa argued that flags for other countries were flown on national days but Transit said the flag did not represent a recognised country. In addition Transit New Zealand allowed corporate flags to fly in the past, such as the Loyal flag. Considering that Transit in the past has been reasonable (i.e. letting the Hikoi cross, allowing the word Kura to be used and recognising the kaitiaki in Meremere) it seems strange that they would deny such a significant symbol of the partnership between Maori and New Zealand to fly...

Te Papa has several interesting events happening around Waitangi Day. The first part of their Debate Series, The Treaty Debates at Te Papa were first held in 2005 and then again in 2006. They have become a notable contribution to the national debate on the Treaty of Waitangi. This year will focus on the Fisheries Settlement (and issue we featured in Issue 1 2007) and is called: Treaty Debates 2007: Fishing For Answers - Maori And The Fisheries.

In the three decades since the widening of the Waitangi Tribunal's powers to investigate historic claims we have heard the contemporary meaning of Article 2 of the treaty debated extensively, culminating, in part, in the passing of the Maori Fisheries Act in September 2004.

In particular this series asked, "What does this development mean for Maori commercial fishing and the future relationship of Maori and Pakeha with the sea?"

This event was held at Soundings Theatre, Level 2 and was to be chaired by Dr Claudia Orange of Te Papa. Be sure to listen to the debate's broadcast on National Radio: 4pm, Sunday 4 February, repeated 9pm, Tuesday 6 February. Also view a live webcast which will be available for download on Saturday 3 February.
Te Papa is holding another Treaty Debate Series, "The Big Picture - Where is the Treaty?" with invited speakers and a chance for public discussion afterwards. The speaker is Justice Edward Taihakurei Durie and he discusses how the term ‘living document' has become synonymous with the Treaty of Waitangi in this country, with three short articles being debated in contexts their original signatories could never have imagined. With so much interpretation and analysis, will the original intentions of this document remain, and does it have a place in the multicultural society of our future?

The debate will be held from Time: 6.30 - 8.00pm on 8 February and will be broadcast live. It will also be available as a podcast and broadcast later on National Radio. We will add the links when they become available. For more information contact Te Papa Tongarewa, 04 381 7000, 04 381 7070.

He says those cultures will be reflected in the day's entertainment and food programme, with South African, Turkish, Indian and Scottish fare on the menu along with a hangi for which 100 plates have already been pre-sold. The Waitangi Day Origins Festival is being held at Masterton's Queen Elizabeth Park.

MC's Joe Mutu and Mereana Matete will then keep the ball rolling, introducing Scottish pipers and dancers then local storyteller Anthony Aporo, belly dancers, a ballet sequence along with a set from rappers and krumpers (a mix of American influence hip hop and dance).

"The underlying message behind the day is to create a better understanding and appreciation of the Treaty of Waitangi and some of the issues still needing to be addressed," Mr Perry said. Kia ora to the Wairarapa Times-Age for this panui.

UK - London: The events held in London, seem to be celebrated in a very English way (i.e. pubcrawls) may make some frown in these parts, but it's important to let you know what is happening and we'll allow you to make your own judgements:

Waitangi Day London will take place on the weekend closest to Waitangi Day (February 6th), New Zealanders in London come out in droves to show their pride. So all are invited (Kiwi or not) to come along for the festivities because this is one of the biggest and best days out in London all year! Be at Paddington around 10am for kickoff.

Last year there were over 8000 participants and this year looks to be even bigger to please remember to be courteous and polite to any shocked looking tube-travellers on the day. Also keep an eye out for a film crew from Maori TV all around the crawl but especially at the Westminster Haka. They're making a doco.

There are also some Waitangi Day (London) t-shirts available for the big day. There are two logos... 'Egg the Queen' and 'Waitangi Day Underground'. Click on the shirts to be taken to the sales page that has a lot more styles of shirts.
USA - San Francisco: The 7th Annual New Zealand American Association-San Francisco Waitangi Day Celebration will be held at the Golden Gate Yacht Club, San Francisco, on Saturday 3rd February 2007. Program includes a Cocktail Reception Buffet with entertainment from a local Kapa Haka (Maori Mo Ake Tonu) group. Followed by Dinner. The evening is topped off with dessert and dancing until midnight.

The New Zealand American Association of San Francisco provides a social and networking forum for Kiwis and their American friends in the Bay Area. At the same time, we work to promote New Zealand - the people, the culture, the food, the wine, the sport, the place (and the hobbits!). We are all ambassadors!

USA - Santa Monica: Made From New Zealand will be launched on Waitangi Day 2007 in Santa Monica (near Los Angeles). For the launch, the plan is to build a huge 100m long silver fern out of sand just south of the pier on Santa Monica Beach. They've commissioned installation artist Mike Mizrahi of Inside Out Productions, a New Zealand based international theatre and events producers made famous with their production for the global 150th birthday celebrations for Louis Vuitton. The Santa Monica Beach installation is the second giant fern sculpture Mizrahi has produced: he built a similar sculpture in 2001 on Bethells Beach in Waitakere City.

Why Los Angeles? Mike Mizrahi explains it best when he says: “The Californian coast is at the other side of the Pacific Ocean from New Zealand, and I love the idea of New Zealanders making a connection across such a vast distance.

It's like the ripple we create here - through our thinking – somehow makes a huge impact around the globe” By building the fern on the Californian Coast, we will literally be making New Zealand's mark on the world.

Kiwi expatriates living in Los Angeles will help Mizrahi build the fern at 1.30pm local time, which means New Zealand will start to see the first images of construction at 10.30 on Waitangi Day.

Images will be screened via a live webcast on this website. For those of you who'd rather watch it on TV, Maori Television will be broadcasting live from Los Angeles during Waitangi Day.

The Made From New Zealand brand has been developed by Auckland-based creative communications partnership Ready Now. The event on Waitangi Day is the global launch of the brand and its website www.madefromnewzealand.com. The website is being developed as an online community of New Zealand businesses, entrepreneurs and creatives, providing them with the ability to network with each other more easily while promoting themselves to customers in New Zealand and around the world.
