An overview of 2007 and the Maori Education Trust's
continued scholarship administration programme.

After 46 years, the Maori Education Trust continues to administer scholarships for students of predominantly Maori descent at secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In 2007 for example, approximately $1 million was awarded to 400 plus students and this was used to assist with costs ranging from uniforms and textbooks to tuition fees.

The government's budget announcement in 2006 made a very significant impact on the Maori Education Trust's scholarship administration programme. The Manaaki Tauira Grant and apart from a small residual programme, the Maori and Polynesian Higher Education Scholarship programmes came to an abrupt end. The impact was not only felt by the Trust itself, but also by the 3 – 5,000 Maori students who received this assistance each year.

You will also have noticed the absence of the Ngarimu VC & 28th (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Scholarships from the Maori Education Trust's Undergraduate and Postgraduate application forms for 2007. The government's budget announcement in 2006 also impacted on the Ngarimu VC & 28th (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund as well as the essay competition. These are now with the Ministry of Education and enquiries should be made to Lyn Tuiqere (Group Maori), Ministry of Education on (04) 463 8203 or lyn.tuiqere@minedu.govt.nz .

New Scholarships in 2007

Despite the challenges presented by the discontinuation of the Manaaki Tauira Grant and Maori and Polynesian Higher Education Scholarship and the transfer of the Ngarimu VC & 28th (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships and Essay Competition to the Ministry of Education, the Maori Education Trust is committed to continuing its own scholarship programme. More importantly, the Maori Education Trust is constantly seeking new scholarship ventures and has been able to secure several new scholarships since the Manaaki Tauira etc programmes were cancelled in 2006 and these are:

•  the Michael Campbell Foundation and Maori Education Trust joint venture to create the Michael Campbell Scholarship where an award of $4,000 goes to an undergraduate university student who is actively involved in their community;

•  the Ricoh joint venture with the Maori Education Trust to establish the Taiao Scholarship. This is an award of $1,000 that is available to a university student undertaking a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Environmental Studies. This scholarship is currently being reviewed, with an aim to broaden the criteria to allow students of polytechnics and wananga to apply, and also those students on similar programmes that have an environmental focus;

•  providing the administrative duties for the Mana Maths Scholarships and the Pearl Sidwell Mana Maths Scholarships for secondary school students on behalf of Mathematics.com.au and Empower Education . The scholarships have no monetary value but they provide free online mathematics tuition to recipients, with the intention of increasing the number of Maori students leaving school with mathematics and science skills.

The 2007 academic year saw the inauguration of all of these scholarships, and the Maori Education Trust is very happy to report that they have all been a great success. The Maori Education Trust is extremely grateful for the partnerships that have been created and therefore acknowledges the contributions of the Michael Campbell Foundation, Ricoh, Pearl Sidwell, Mathematics.com.au and Empower Education for the generous support.

The Trust is very keen to maintain these and enter into more meaningful relationships in the years ahead.

New Scholarships in 2008

We are currently liaising with several organisations in order to establish scholarships that we hope to launch in the 2008 academic year.

Matariki Forests has approached the Maori Education Trust to set up secondary school and undergraduate scholarships for students from the Te Tai Tokerau/Tamaki Makaurau, Hauraki and Tauranga Moana regions. There will be three secondary scholarships available at a value of $500 each, and one undergraduate award at $3,000 value.

Raffles Design Institute has offered to sponsor 12 scholarships for Maori students of their institute. We are currently in consultation with Raffles Design Institute to finalise the details of these scholarships.

AgResearch and Ngapuhi iwi are currently considering proposals that will further benefit Maori students and their quest to gain meaningful qualifications that would benefit them and their iwi.
